Initial Design

This project was focused on creative design and experimenting with new manufacturing processes and modeling techniques. The design theme chosen was Outer Space, with each side of the board representing alien or human spacecraft.

CAD Modeling

A lot of 3D sketching and surfacing modeling was used to achieve the more complex gemetry of the chess peices, and displacment mapping was used to achieve an organic texture for the base of each part. The inside tray was designed in the context of an assembly to design around each peice so they would fit well, but still allow us to use the same mold for both black and white peices, despite different designs.

Final Assembly

The board was laser etched and edges were mitered and then joined using acrylic weld. The inner tray was FDM printed using a light infill and then thermoformed, and the peices themselves were 3D printed with ABS then smoothed using acetone.
